Episode 7: 1993
After a mid-season hiatus, the Oak Park Music League podcast is back by popular demand!
In Week Seven, Nate joins Duncan, Mike & Rich to travel back to 1993 and analyze the OPML playlist. Don't look for Nirvana, The Breeders, Pearl Jam, Liz Phair or Smashing Pumpkins. Instead get ready for Steel Pole Bathtub, Madder Rose, Fastbacks and the legendary Trashcan Sinatras. And did Duran Duran actually have a comback that year? Boy did they ever.
Episode 6: Rap 2010-2015
The All New Episode of the Oak Park Music League is here: Rap 2010 – 2015!
In Week Six the OPML brings special guest Ryan - 4 time League champion and Music League G.O.A.T. - to analyze the list and the results.
Episode 5: Label Me
It’s Label week - music from Sire Records - and the 11 League contenders compete in a 22 song playlist that explores the legacy of legendary Sire Records. More importantly, SPECIAL GUEST Dan (2x League Champion, 1x Silver, 2x Bronze) joins Duncan, Mike & Rich to analyze the playlist, discuss the Sire sound, argue about the definition of Britpop, and debate the highlights and lowlights of the week.
Episode 4: Surf!
In Week 4 the League must create a Surf playlist. A fairly straightforward task but at the 11th hour a fear of 22 instrumentals blurring into an hour of indistinguishable drippy reverb prompts a new request: submit one instrumental surf & one vocal surf. But is there such a thing as a true Surf song with a vocal, or are the purists correct? It’s a perfect topic for Mike & Rich to get worked up about, while Duncan just wants to know which songs “float.” Fortunately the 22 song playlist kicks ass, pure Surf or not.
Episode 3: Two Songs, Same Title
In Week 3 everyone has to submit two songs with the same title. All three of us are pretty damned proud of our submissions, but what are they? Duncan & Mike have a blast getting into the “Mannequin Man” songs. Meanwhile, Rich is particularly excited about the pair of “Cold Lips”. But can two songs named “Mannequin Man” & “Cold Lips” really be that good? Also, most of us are dreading that the two outstanding “Pills” cuts are probably Ryan’s picks, but is it as obvious as it seems? And finally what can be said of the two “Superman” songs? Yikes.
Episode 2: Men at Work
As league participants continue to color outside the lines, Rich verges on trolling, but then heartily eats his words. Mike is bewildered by the winning submission and the league’s propensity to fall for a particular kind of “ok, mediocre song.” Duncan is well rested from a pre-podcast nap and his energy surges in a must-hear tirade at the close of the show.
Episode 1: Natural Disasters
Welcome to the all new first episode of the the OP Music League podcast. In the inaugural episode, Duncan, Mike & Rich dissect the Natural Disasters playlist. Nobody is very pleased but Rich is clearly the most frustrated.
